How to start a Shopify store in 2026 — step by step (no experience needed)

Most beginners open Shopify, click around for an hour and close it again. Not because it is hard, but because nobody told them the order. This is the order we teach in the Ecom Masterclass, written for someone starting from an empty account.

1. Pick one product, not a niche

A "niche" is too vague to start with. Pick one product you can describe in one sentence to a stranger: who it is for, what problem it solves, why they would buy it today. If you cannot write that sentence, you do not have a product yet.

2. Create the store (15 minutes)

Sign up at Shopify, choose a short store name, and skip every optional step. You can change everything later. Do not buy a domain yet; the free .myshopify.com address is fine until you have your first sale.

3. Install a theme and keep it simple

A premium theme saves days of fiddling, but the free themes also sell. What matters is: a clear product photo, one clear price, one button. Remove every section you do not need. A clean store with one product converts better than a busy store with twenty.

4. Write the product page like a conversation

Title: the product plus the main benefit. First paragraph: who it is for. Then three to five bullet points with what is in the box, and finally shipping time and your guarantee. Use your own photos if you can, even phone photos beat supplier stock images.

5. Payments, shipping, legal pages

Turn on Shopify Payments (or PayPal), set one flat shipping rate, and generate the refund, privacy and terms pages from Shopify's templates. Add your business name and contact details — in the EU this is required by law, and customers check it.

6. Test the checkout yourself

Place a test order on your phone, from the ad link to the thank-you page. Half of the stores that "do not sell" simply have a broken step here.

7. First traffic: one ad, one audience, small budget

Start with one Meta campaign, one ad set, one image ad, around $10 per day. Give it four days before you judge it. Write down before you start what a sale may cost you (your break-even cost per sale); that number decides whether you scale or stop.

What you do not need yet

A logo you paid for, a company registration in week one, five apps, a custom domain, a TikTok account. All of that comes after the first sales.
